ENVIROCLUB ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024 FOR VELEDICTORY

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY: 5th JUNE 2023

In observance of World Environment Day, the Enviroclub organized an awareness program on the theme "Solutions to Plastic Pollution"on 5th June 2023. As part of the initiative, Enviroclub coordinators and secretaries distributed 150 saplings to faculty members, parents, visitors, and students, embodying the club's "Nurture Nature, Save Future."

GREEN CHAMPION AWARD: JUNE 5th JUNE 2023

Our college proudly received the prestigious Green Championship Awardalong with a cash prize of ?1,00,000, presented by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on 5th June. The award ceremony was graced by the presence of the HonoUrable District Collector, who personally handed over the recognition. This accolade celebrates our college's unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and highlights the collective efforts of our institution in promoting eco-friendly practices and green initiatives.

NATIONAL MOTH WEEK: 24th 30th JULY 2023

In commemoration of National Moth Week 24th – 30th July, the Enviroclub members joined as WWF volunteer to embark on the hunt for moths. An online orientation webinar by the WWF National on Moth Week was held on July 24th 2023.

WEBINAR

1. The first speaker was Ms. Subiksha, an Education Officer at WWF India, who provided an introduction to the activities and initiatives of WWF in Chennai.

2. The second speaker was Dr. S.A. Vidhya, Assistant Professor in Zoology at Stella Maris College and an E-bird Regional Reviewer. She explained the significance and objectives of Moth Week.

3. The third speaker was Dr. H. Sankararaman, Assistant Professor at Vanavarayar Institute of Agriculture, Pollachi. He shared various methods for moth spotting, which included:

  • Passive Methods
    • Traps (lights)
    • Baits
  • Active Methods
    • Hand Collection
    • Sweep Net

5. Mr. Vikas Madhav Nagarajan, a graduate in Public Policy, naturalist, author, E-bird reviewer, and Butterflies of India reviewer, concluded the session by explaining basic moth identification methods.

WORLD OZONE DAY: 15th SEPTEMBER 2023

In commemoration of World Ozone Day on 15th September 2023, the Enviroclub members organized a meaningful celebration to mark the occasion. Informative and visually engaging posters were displayed across the campus to raise awareness on the theme, "How to Save Our Earth from Ozone Depletion." The initiative aimed to educate and inspire students, faculty, and visitors to take proactive steps in protecting the ozone layer and preserving the environment for future generations.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY: 16th SEPTEMBER 2023

On 16th September 2023, a team of 166 dedicated Enviroclub volunteers, accompanied by four teachers, actively participated in the "International Coastal Cleanup Drive" at Marina Beach. This impactful event, organized by the Indian Coast Guard in collaboration with the TREE Foundation, took place from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM. The volunteers enthusiastically contributed to the cleanup efforts, collecting and segregating waste to restore the natural beauty of the beach and promote environmental conservation. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the critical importance of reducing marine pollution and safeguarding coastal ecosystems.

The participation of the Enviroclub team underscored their commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener planet and inspired the local community to take responsibility for protecting our coastal environments.

MADRAS DAY CELEBRATION - HERITAGE TREE TOUR: 20th SEPTEMBER 2023 AND 27th SEPTEMBER 2023

Enviroclub members and students of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women participated in the “Madras Day Celebration - The Heritage Tree Tour” on 20th and 27th August 2023. Organized by the Green Tamil Nadu Mission in collaboration with Nizhal NGO and the Rotary Club, the event highlighted the importance of conserving Chennai's heritage trees and urban green spaces.

WORLD WILDLIFE WEEK: 2nd – 8th OCTOBER 2023

The Enviroclub organized an impactful awareness program, Camouflage’23, to commemorate World Wildlife Week from 2nd to 8th October 2023. The event featured Dr. Supraja Dharini as the esteemed Guest of Honour, who delivered an inspiring address on the topic, "Involving Youth in the Study of Marine Life Conservation."

Interdepartmental competitions were held as part of the celebration, with enthusiastic student participation in a variety of onstage and offstage events. Additionally, Enviroclub members from all 16 departments displayed thought-provoking placards throughout the week, fostering awareness among students about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

NILGIRI TAHR DAY: 07th OCTOBER 2023

The Enviroclub, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the National Green Corps (NGC), commemorated Nilgiri Tahr Day on 7th October 2023. The event witnessed the participation of 120 school students, who were guided on a Tree Walk within the college campus by the Department of Botany.

As part of the program, the Enviroclub coordinators demonstrated Vermi-culture technology, emphasizing sustainable practices, and distributed saplings to the students to promote greenery. The event concluded with the felicitation of prize winners from Camouflage ’23, celebrating their achievements and contributions.

SWACHH BHARAT MISSION: 02nd OCTOBER 2023

In observance of the Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October 2023, the Enviroclub members from the Afternoon session actively participated in a cleanliness drive, taking the initiative to ensure the college premises remained clean and well-maintained. Their efforts reflected a strong commitment to promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility within the campus community.

NATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY: 02nd OCTOBER 2023

In commemoration of Energy Conservation Day on 2nd October 2023, the Enviroclub members from the Afternoon session undertook a thoughtful initiative to promote energy conservation. From 2:15 PM to 2:30 PM, they turned off lights and fans across the campus for 15 minutes, demonstrating the importance of reducing electricity consumption and fostering awareness about sustainable energy practices.

PRAGATI'24 - 5TH MARCH 2024

The Enviroclub organized its annual awareness program, Pragati'24, on 5th March 2024. The event was graced by the distinguished Tmt. L. Sowmya, Assistant Conservator of Forests & Deputy Director, as the Guest of Honour.

During the program, both inter- and intra-collegiate competitions were held, and the winners were felicitated for their outstanding performances. The event also included a special recognition ceremony, where the Enviroclub secretaries from both the Forenoon and Afternoon sessions were awarded service trophies in acknowledgment of their dedication and leadership throughout the year.
