Profile of the Department:

The Department of Commerce was the first department to be established under the self-financing stream in the year 1990. The Department had a humble beginning with 50 students in the first batch under the able guidance and leadership of Mrs. Meenakshi Thiyagarajan, the first woman to graduate in Commerce from the University of Madras. After twenty seven years of its establishment the department still holds the premiere position in terms of students’ strength and popularity.

The Department is industriously running three courses in the UG stream viz., B.Com. (General), B.Com. (Accounting & Finance) and B.Com. (Honours). To cater to the rising demand for a post graduate course in commerce, the Department introduced M.Com. (General) from the academic year 2017-18. The Department has excelled in sports and cultural activities. To provide hands-on experience to the students, the department organizes seminars, workshops, industrial Visits and guest lectures by industry experts every year. The department has signed MOUs with various companies as a part of Industry-Institution tie-up.

The department caters to the needs of first generation learners and the socially challenged sections of the society. About 35% of students are first generation learners and 65% are from the socially backward sections. The department also conducts certificate courses in emerging business fields of study.

To offer education of the highest quality in the field of Commerce by providing an atmosphere that will foster the intellectual pursuit of the students and enhance their skills, ability and knowledge in order to create talent needed to meet the growing global demand.

To develop students who match the international standards through total commitment and dedication, and promote analytical, creative and independent thinking to pursue research. To sharpen corporate skills of the students and help them gain new perspectives in the field of Commerce.
