Gender equality also known as sexual equality is the state of equal case of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviours, aspirations and needs equality, regardless of gender.
Gender equality is the goal, while gender neutrality and gender equality are practices and ways of thinking that help in achieving the goal.

The Principle:

  • -   To promote all forms of gender equity that reflect the needs and aspirations of women.
  • -   To empower women through a feminist approach and inspiring them to work as active citizens for social justice.

The Centre for Women’s Studies of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women, Chennai, established in 2005 under the X Plan Scheme is the first UGC sponsored Centre under the University of Madras. The Centre is committed to the preservation, expansion and transmission of knowledge about women. It is committed to support the achievement of gender equality and ensure women empowerment.

Goals and Objectives of CWS:

  • -   The four cutting edge objectives of the Centre are Teaching, Training, Research and Advocacy for the betterment of women.
  • -   To bring about the advancement, development, upliftment and empowerment of women.
  • -   To inspire women students with images and role models that would enable to expand their dreams and realise their full potential.
  • -   To raise educational and career aspirations for adolescent girls and women.
  • -   To gender sensitise the public, faculty and students on women’s issues.

Guiding Principles:

  • -   Creating awareness about gender-based violence and thereby reduce gender inequalities among young women.
  • -   Promoting participation of women as agents of change in economic, social and political processes.
  • -   Deploying a gender-transformative approach and sustaining results through social and behavioural change and communication.
  • -   Bringing about an attitudinal shift in women.

Initiatives Adopted:

  • -   The CWS offers two Non-Major Elective Papers for the Undergraduate students of the Forenoon Session under the Choice Based Credit System namely, “An Introduction to Women’s Studies” and “Women’s Rights in Laws in India”, approved by Board of Studies.
  • -   The Centre has hosted two Refresher Courses in Women’s Studies for the teaching faculty in 2011 and 2012.
  • -   The Centre regularly organises Special Lectures, Seminars, Workshops, Conferences, Interdepartmental and Intercollegiate Competitions, Gender Sensitisation and Training Programmes to equip women with skills pertaining to the changing scenario.
  • -   The Centre conducts Legal Awareness Programmes to spread awareness on the Constitutional guarantees available for women.
  • -   The Centre has established an extensive network to promote academic exchanges with other colleges, universities, lawyers and NGOs in the country.
  • -   The Centre has completed three Field Action Research Projects sponsored by the National Commission for Women.
  • -   The Centre has initiated programmes to create awareness on Social Legislations, Constitutional Guarantees, Government Policies and Programmes available for the development of women.
  • -   The Library of the Centre has a high quality collection of reference books which enables students and faculty to pursue research in women related areas and thereby continues to strive for the empowerment and uplift of women.
  • -   The Centre regularly invites Officials, Academicians, Lawyers, NGO Leaders and Journalists as Experts for its Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and Training Programmes.
