The Department of Commerce was established in the year 1971 and holds the distinction of being the first womens college affiliated to the University of Madras to introduce the B.Com Course. To accommodate the growing demand for the B.Com course, the Department has expanded its students strength through three sections of under graduate Course. In the year 1986 the department upgraded itself to a Post graduate department by introducing the M.Com programme and in the year 2005 M.Phil programme was introduced. The University of Madras has granted recognition as M.phil Guides to 12 staff members of the department.
To offer education of the highest quality in the field of Commerce by providing an atmosphere that will foster the intellectual pursuit of the students and enhance their skills, ability and knowledge in order to create talent needed to meet the growing global demand.
To develop students who match the international standards through total commitment and dedication, and promote analytical, creative and independent thinking to pursue research. To sharpen corporate skills of the students and help them gain new perspectives in the field of Commerce.
The Commerce Department is the largest Department in the College with respect to students’ strength which is about 700 students. The only course that is in great demand right from its inception to date and offers courses that have a great potential for employability and entrepreneurship. The Department has the distinction of having a demand ratio of students admitted to the applications received. The Department moulds the students through its holistic approach which is reflected in the excellent pass percentages and placements over the years.
