History

The Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 1996. This is the only aided Women’s College in the city of Chennai offering B.Sc Biochemistry programme under two streams - Biochemistry (General) and Biochemistry with Vocational Biotechnology. Since its inception, the department has always strived to be on par with the recent trends in this rapidly evolving field by offering enriched learning experience to young women aspirants. We are proud to state that so far about 1000 students have graduated from this department and have been successfully placed in various sectors across the country.

Vision

To impart knowledge of the concepts and principles of Biochemistry to young women students and equip them with recent tools and techniques in clinical diagnosis which enhance employability skills to meet the growing demands of the society.

Highlights

DBT Star College Status 

The only Department in the city to have been recognized under the DBT Star College Scheme by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, for excellence in undergraduate science education.

Well-Equipped Laboratories 

The department houses instruments such as Colorimeters, UV-Visible Spectrophotometers, Ultra Centrifuges, Muffle furnaces, Incubators, Flame Photometers, Electrophoresis Units, semi auto analysers, ECG machine, Haemoglobinometer, Urine Analyser, Soxhlet units, Rotary vacuum evaporator, Distillation unit, PCR machine Electrophoresis and Chromatography units. These facilities support experiential learning, student research, and hands-on training in molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, and analytical techniques.

Interdisciplinary and Value-Added Courses 

Regularly conducts certificate and value-added courses in emerging areas such as Fundamentals of Biocomputing, Clinical Data Management and Basics of Medical Coding and Billing

The Department has active MoUs with reputed institutions and training providers like Affyclone Laboratories, Sri Balaji Vocational Training Institute and Mehta Hospital to offer hands-on learning and exposure to real-world applications.

Organizes seminars, guest lectures, workshops, and industrial visits to enhance student knowledge beyond the syllabus.

The department actively engages in outreach and extension activities to foster scientific awareness and social responsibility. These include organizing interactive science sessions for school students to promote scientific temper at the grassroots level.

Encourages students to volunteer in community service initiatives such as medical camps for spinal cord injured persons, and volunteering for national events like the Para Fencing Championship, thereby instilling a spirit of empathy, inclusivity, and civic engagement among students.

Students of the department consistently demonstrate strong academic performance, with many pursuing higher education in premier Institutes and securing placements in reputed organizations.
