Profile of the SIET Nursery and Primary School
Foundation Tablet for the S.I.E.T Nursery and Primary School which was started as child development and family relationship Laboratory was laid by the Honorable Sir.M.Bhakthavatsalam. B.A. B.L. – Chief Minister Government of Madras on 26th February 1964.

It was declared open by Professor Mr.Humayyun Kabir, Ex.Union Minister, Govt.of India on 9th September 1966.

The Nursery and Primiary School was originally started as a child Development Laboratory for 3 to 5 year old children for observation purpose by B.Sc. and M.Sc Home Science students as part of their practical work.

Subsequently the strength of Nursery School increased and regular teachers were employed for the L.K.G and U.K.G. Sections.

This Nursery and Primary School is unique in that it has observation booth where children and their activities like learning, playing, eating etc.. are observed with out their knowledge by means of one way vision screen.  The Nursery and Primary School has a staff room and separate classrooms for L.K.G and U.K.G.  Apart from this there are dining room and child sized toilets.

The L.K.G. and U.K.G classroom has desks and chairs, which are made to suit the children’s height and weight.

There is an out door play area which is covered with sand for the safety of the children.  It has slider, merry go round, jungle gym, monkey ladder, swings etc.. for outdoor play.  For indoor play suitable toys are provided.  Once in a year different activities like singing, drawing, sports and fancy dress competitions are held and prizes are distributed.  Festivals like Ramzan, Christmas and Deepavali are also celebrated to make the children aware of their significance.

It is due to the untiring efforts and dedication of our beloved founder late Justice.  Basheer Ahmed Sayeed sahib and his illustrious wife Chairman Late Fathima Akthar Sahiba, we have a Nursery and Primary School where in these children have the advantage of studying an environment benefiting the students of the institution besides having access to the most modern system of education and training.





            This nursery has certain salient features which makes it unique in the state of Tamil Nadu.  The nursery consists.

1. Observation booth:

There is a one way screen provided for the students, who observe the various activities of the preschool children while playing, eating, classroom teaching, socializing, and their over all development by means of one way vision screens.  The children are observed without their knowledge by the observers – B.Sc and M.Sc students, M.Phil and Ph.D scholars.

2. Playground for outdoor activities:

There is a spacious playground as an outdoor area which is covered with good quality sea sand for the safety of the children while playing. It is equipped with slides, merry go round, monkey ladder, jungle gym, swing etc to improve the physical motor and social development of children.

3. Classroom facilities:

The nursery has two classrooms accommodating 79 children out of which 45 belong to LKG class and 34 belong to UKG class.

4. Dinning area:

There is a well ventilated dining area comprising of tables and chairs of miniature stature to suit the height of the children.  Each child is provided with a separate chair while dining.  The children’s likes and dislikes in their eating habits and their ability to eat without spilling, ability to share, to socialize, ability to use the refuse disposal method in using dustbins are inculcated.

5. Indoor Play area:

There is a huge corridor and spacious classrooms provided for indoor activities for children.  There is a doll corner with a study corner, science corner, book corner, kitchen and dining area bedroom and the living room.  Dolls are provided to show the various characters like father doll, mother doll, and baby doll.  The emotions of the children can be observed through this doll corner.

6. Toilet facilities:

There is a toilet constructed to suit the size of the children.

7. Mirrors:

To develop the self image and self concept, two huge mirrors are provided in each classroom for children.

8. Kitchen:

The kitchen is well equipped with a fridge, gas, stove, cooking utensils and vessels.

9. Drinking water facilities:

Children are provided with Bisleri water for drinking.


Nursery School Timings

            The LKG and UKG classes start from 8.00am along with college.  There is a break at 10.00am for children to have their snacks and 11.30am LKG students disperse the UKG children are taught to read and write the rudimentary skills which are necessary for the first standard.

            The curriculum gives lot of significance to play way method of teaching.  The Children are allowed to experiment with colourful toys, dolls, building blocks, peg boards and puzzles.

            The materials used for teaching are

a) Picture charts, number charts and story charts
b) Boards – bulletin boards and black boards
c) Books – rhymes, story telling, drawing, sketching and colouring.


The Post graduate students make teaching aids as part of their Early Childhood Education practicals – vegetables, flowers, cartoons, fruits, means of transport, animals, birds, etc.

They organize programs for the tiny tots.  Children are given gifts and sweets by the students.  They also organize a Parent-Teacher’s Meeting.

The nursery also has a tape-recorder and a VCD player to enhance their story telling and language skills.


1. Talent Show:

Students are trained to exhibit their talents to overcome their stage fear.  This is the first opportunity given to them to enact various rhymes of action songs on the Dias.

2. Students participation:

The post graduate students specializing in HDFS are made to conduct different programs to develop various concepts in the form of dramatization, story telling, singing and dancing.


The post graduate students also enact Christmas Celebration, Pongal, Bakrid, Deepavali and Ramzan as part of their Early childwood education practicals.

4. Fancy Dress Competition:

It is conducted for the preschoolers to enhance the ability of role modeling and to wean away the stage fear.  Children are encouraged to tap out their talents by enacting the roles of eminent leaders and the people in the society.  Competitions are held and prizes are distributed to the participants.

5. Sports activities:

Children are allowed to participate in various sport events like running race, frog race and potato picking.  Prizes and consolation prizes are given to the winners and participants respectively.

6. Singing Competition:

Children are given free choice to select either a nursery rhyme or from media and sing along with the actions.  Judges are invited from various Departments of our own college to judge the performance.

7. Drawing and Colouring competition:

There is no particular theme for drawing.  Children are allowed to do free hand drawing and colour the figures drawn according to their own will.  These drawings are assessed and prizes are distributed.

8. National days:

Republic day and Independence Day – children are made aware of the national days celebrations.  Refreshments are distributed to the children.

9. Cultural Extravaganza:

Both L.K.G. & U.K.G come out with a variety show with colorful dress & amazing performance with fairy tales skit, choir action songs & various dances etc.

10. Graduation:

The U.K.G. Students leave the portals of the nursery school after getting equipped with a rudimentary skill for formal education.  The L.K.G bid farewell by giving them a variety show.

11. Research activities:

The post graduate students, M.Phil and Ph.D scholars are given opportunities to conduct research activities on curriculam development , teaching methodologies, physical, motor, intellectual, emotional and social development, behavioral problems, eating habits of the children.

12. Records and Registers:

The records maintained in the nursery school are attendance registers, mark registers, library registers and stock registers.

13. Library facilities:

Library is also provided in the nursery school.  There are about 100 books of rhymes, stories, numbers, puzzles and alphabets.

14. Admission:

Application forms are issued in the month of January for the forth coming year to be started in the month of june.  The school is opened for children of 3-5 years of age.  The year comprises of 3 terms with 5 working days per week.
