History

The department of Sanskrit exists since the inception of the College. It was headed by Dr. S. Janaki, who became the Director of KSRI, Mylapore, Chennai. The department was fondly taken care of, by Mrs. R. V. Jayem (daughter of Sriromani Krishnamachari, author, History of Sanskrit Literature) for over 2 decades. Presently it is headed by Dr. N. Sujatha, who is amply competent to handle the subject.

  • Presented three papers in the National Seminars, organized by different Karnataka Samskrit University University, Swadeshi Vijnana Andolana-Karnataka jointly with Kartakata State Women’s University and Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College in association with The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute.
  • Mrs. R. Chitra of the Department was invited as a judge for the Sanskrit day competitions on 06th August 2014 held at Vani Vidyalaya Senior Secondary and Junior College, Chennai
  • Participated in the Workshop conducted by Mambalam Samskrita Vidyalaya, in the title, ‘Vedas for the Modern World’, as part of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, in 2014.
  • Presented a paper on, “THE THREE WOMEN CHARACTERS IN MRICCHAKATIKA”, in a National Seminar organized by Karnataka Samskrit University on the topic, ‘The Role of Women as reflected in Samskrit Literature’ in the month of September 2014 in the title,
  • Abstract presented on, “THE TECHNIQUE OF PREPARING PLASTER AS DESCRIBED IN ANCIENT SANSKRIT TEXTS”, in a National Seminar conducted by Swadeshi Vijnana Andolana-Karnataka jointly with Kartakata State Women’s University on the topic, ‘7th National Women’s Science Congress’, in the month of November, in 2014.
  • Presented a paper on, “GEOMETRICAL APPLICATIONS”, in the UGC Seminar conducted by Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College in association with The Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institue, on the topic, ‘Science in Ancient India’, during the month of February 2015.

Student Achievements

Moreover, students are constantly informed of inter collegiate level competitions and encouraged to participate and own several prizes. Some are as follows:

DG Vaishnav College of Arumbakkam along with Samskritabharathi conducted a Research Projects related to Sanskrit for Under-graduate-students. Students of II year, A. Priya Annapoorani, N. Radha Shree, M. Lakshmi Priya, of B.Com.ISM Department and V.S. Harini of B.Com CS, presented paper, posters and power point, in the title, “The History of undivided Bharatam” in the month of June 2014.

In the month of August 2014 Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women conducted a Inter-Collegiate Literary Competition and Shwetha Krishna, B.Sc. Microbiology, II year, won first prize in the subhashitani writing and G. Indu, B.Sc.IDD, II year, participated in the drawing

SDNB Vaishnav College for Women arranged for a inter-collegiate in the month of August 2014 and Shwetha Krishna, B.Sc. Microbiology, II year, won first prize in the subhashitani writing and Sai Shruthi. G, B.Sc. Statistics, II year won the second prize in the solo singing competition.

In the month of November 2014, Meenakshi College for Women (Autonomous) conducted its Inter-Collegiate Culturals. In the Bhagavad Gita quiz, student of I year from the Department of Statistics, S. Deepalakshmi and N.S. Harini of Computer Science Department secured second prize.

Department of Sanskrit of Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous) conducted the Annual Association Meet in the month of December 2014 and our students participated in the Collage and won the first prize.

Department of Sanskrit of Stella Maris College organized a one day Inter Collegiate Student Seminar in the title, ‘Sarvamasti Samskruta Vanghmaye’. Students from I B. Com Honours Anusha Sreedhar, P.S. Aishwarya of B.Com (G), Sangeetha of B.Com (ISM), Hari Priya and Gowri Sona of BES presented their paper in the seminar with power point presentation.

Activities

The Department of Sanskrit conducted its Annual Association Meet, ‘SAHRUDAYA’ for the academic year 2014-15, on 27th August 2014, in the Diamond Jubilee Block by Dr. V. Sowmyanarayanan, HOD of Sanskrit, DG Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, Chennai. He inaugurated the meeting and delivered a interesting talk on the title, “SANSKRIT – THE EVERGREEN LANGUAGE”. He gave some valuable informations regarding, how make use of the Sanskrit words in our day to day life.

On 28th January 2015, the Department conducted its Inter-Collegiate Competitions “MAITHRI” in the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall. Students from various colleges like Ethiraj College, SDNB Vaishnav College, MOP Vaishnav College, Queen Marys College, took active participation in the different events such as, sloka recitation, subhashitani writing, chitralekhanam and quiz on ‘Agni Purana’ and backed prizes. Mrs. A.K. Chandra, Retired Head of the Department of Sanskrit of Presidency College inauagrated the function and was the judge for the subhashitani writing and sloka recitation. Mrs. Thejo Maye Mohan, Associate Professor, Department of Home Science (FN) of JBAS College was the judge for the chitralekhanam and the quiz was conducted by Dr. K. Prasanth, Associate Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Vivekananda College and concluded the day with his valedictory address. The overall trophy was won by SDNB Vaishnav College for Women.
