History

Inauguration of the Seminar.

In the year 1955, the  Departments of Botany and Zoology were clubbed together as the Department of Biology. The Department of Botany was established as a separate department in 1965. In 2002, the nomenclature of the department changed from Botany to Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology.

 

We are proud to place on record that the department has produced a number of University Rank holders and Gold Medalists. The department has been Organizing Seminars, Workshop and Medicinal Plant Exhibitions at National and State level.  Special Lecture Programmes are arranged with eminent persons  regularly. The department also offers an Interdisciplinary Add –on- Course entitled “Herbal and Medicinal plants” from 2005 onwards. All the faculty members have published and presented papers at International, National, Regional level seminars and  Conferences. The department maintains a Herbal Garden  in the campus. The faculty members and students enthusiastically participated in the tree census programme with the Indian Forest Department. Every year educational  trips and tour programmes are organized to study the environment and the flora in their natural habitat.

Department Activities 2016-2017

1.Lecture on Floriculture Technique Hydroponics and Cut flower techniques in Floriculture on 2nd August 2016 for NME, Allied and Major students.

2.Hands on training on Permananent slide prepararion for third year, Second year and First year students on 3rd and 4th August 2016 - workshop conducted by our department in collaboration with UGC sponsered Star College Scheme.

3.Field visit to Ezhilsolai – a training programme on Organic Farming training programme organized for third year and Second year students on 5th August 2016 in collaboration with UGC sponsered Star College Scheme.

4.Workshop on Floriculture – A Hands on training programmeon 9th August 2016 for NME, Allied, Major students, Department staffs and other department staffs.

5.Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology inaugurated the Association Ceremony on 28.08.2016. Dr.Vijayaanandraj, Deputy Manager, e - learning Solution, Sify Technologies Ltd has presided the ceremony on the topic Career guidance in Life Science. The Speech was impressive and eye opener for the students to build their career.

6.Educational tour -The Department organized an Educational trip for third year students to Wayanad, Coorg and Mysore on 25th August 7th September to 9th September 2016 accompanied by the faculty members Dr. (Mrs.) BeemaJainah S. I and Mrs. B. Saritha.

8.Hands on training on Herbarium technique for third year students on 29thSeptember 2016 - workshop conducted by our department in collaboration with UGC sponsered Star College Scheme.

Department Activities 2015-2016

1.The inauguration activities of the Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology was started with a free workshop on Vegetable Carving for three days from 3rd to 5th August 2015.The workshop was handled by the guest Dr. Chef Vinoth Kumar for thestudents of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology and Allied.

2.The Department Association was held on 11th August 2015. The Chief guestDr. Shaik KhajaRasool, member in National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), MOEF, Government of India addressed the students and faculty on the topic “Biodiversity and it’s Conservation”.

3.The department organized a National Workshop on Phycomarine - It’s Significance on 12th January 2016. The inaugural and Key note address was given by the Guest of Honour Prof. Dr. G. Subramanian, Director and Research Advisor, Central Interdisciplinary Research Institute, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute Campus, Puducherryand highlighted on the topic “Marine Algae- Panacea for Biotechnology in Future”. The technical session was started by the GuestDr. V. Sivasubramanian, Director Phycospectrum Environment Research Centre, Chennaion the topic“Phycoremediation Technology- An efficient way to manage industrial wastes and flue gas mitigation”. Live telecast ofalgal jelly preparation was demonstrated by Mr. M. Rajendra Kumar, Proprietor, R. K. Algae Project Centre, Mandapam, Ramanathapuram.He also Exhibited an Algal show of Tamil Nadu Marine Algae. The next thought provoking lecture was on the topic“Phycomarine of Tamil Nadu- Identification and Application”given by the Guest Dr. M. Baluswami, Associate Professor and H.O.D., Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Madras Christian College, Chennai. The Valedictory Address was given by Dr. V.V. Subramanian, Former Principal and H.O.D, Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, R.K.M. Vivekananda College, Chennai.

4.The Department organized a demonstration and a lecture for the students of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology on Azolla Cultivation byMrRajendra Kumar and Mrs Romaine San Francisco on Organic Farming.

5.Dr. (Mrs.) BeemaJainab S.I. and P. Thenmozhi accompanied the students for one day training programme on vegetable carving on 4th July 2015.

6.The Department organized an Educational trip to Ooty and Mysore for Plant collection on 25th August 2015 to 28th August 2015 for third year students accompanied by the faculty members P. Thenmozhi and B. Saritha Students made an Industrial visit to the Doddabetta Tea Factory and Tea Museum and gathered information on History and processing of Tea leaves. The students also visited CFTRI, Bangalore and gained knowledge on food processing and preservation techniques.

7.The Department Organized the seminar on “Medicinal Herbs and Biofuel” and also displayed medicinal plants on 6th February 2016 as a part of the Herbal – Club (Enviroclub) in the Golden Jubilee seminar hall.

8.The department organized a Horticultural Visit to Yelagiri for second year students on 2nd January 2016 accompanied by the faculty members Dr. (Mrs.) BeemaJainab S.I., Dr. (Mrs.) Shaik Azeem Taj and B. Saritha.

9.Dr. (Mrs.) BeemaJainab S.I. and Mrs. P. Jabeena Begum accompanied the Students on Youth awakening day special programs held at Birla Planetarium held on 14th and 15th October 2015organised by Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre.

10.The department organized an Inter class Competition “Botanica 2016” on Plant Identification and Vegetable carving on 22nd February 2016.

11.The Staff members accompanied the second year students in the Out Reach Programme “Health and Hygiene” to the students of Dyslexia centre , S.I.E.T campus in the month of December 2015.

12.Hands on training on “Roof Gardening” conducted for second year students on 29th March 2016in collaboration with UGC sponsered Star College Scheme.

13.Hands on training on “Phytochemical screening” for third year students 31stMarch 2016- workshop conducted forfinal year students in collaboration with UGC sponsered Star College Scheme.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2014 -2015

1. Educational tour was organized for III year Students to Mysore and Ooty from06 .08.14 to 08.08.14 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.

2. Field visit was organized for II year Students to Cholaiyul Farm -horticultural garden on 28.08.14.

3. A Workshop on “Green Campus: An Environmental Quality Monitoring” was organized by the department in collaboration with Ajuba Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., Chennai for two days (3rd& 4th December 2014).

4. Educational tour was organized for III year Students to Mysore and Ooty from11 .09.12 to 16.09.12 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.

5. International Seminar on “Biotechnology- Challenging the Challenges of the Changing World (BCCCW 2015)”was organized by PG and Research Department of Zoology, Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Department of Biochemistry and PG Department of Applied Microbiology.

6. A Seminar on “Millets and Herbal Drugs” was organized by the Department on 09/02/2015.A varieties of food was prepared using millets and displayed during the Seminar.

7. Medicinal plant Exhibition was organized by II year students on 06.03.2015

6. Inter Class Competitions were conducted on Plant Identification, Vegetable Carving and Fresh & Dry Flower arrangement on 07.03.2015

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2013 -2014

1. Association meeting was held on 28.09.2013. The chief Guest was Dr. P. Kumarasamy, Professor and Head, Dept of Bioinformatics Centre, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. Elucidate on Bioinformatics and Drug Discovery.

2. Organized a Workshop on Plant Tissue Culture on 3rd 4th October 2013. The Keynote address was given by Dr. E. Sumathi, Ph.D, Director, Poonga Biotech Research Centre, Choolaimedu, Chennai and Dr. B. Janarthanam, Ph.D, Chief Scientist, Poonga Biotech Research Centre, Choolaimedu, Chennai offer Hands On Training in Plant Tissue Culture for the students of Science discipline.

3. Educational tour was organized for III year Students to Munnar and Cochin from 08.10.13 to 11.10.13 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.

4. Field visit was organized for II year Students to Shiva parvathi pushpa horticultural garden on 18.12.13.

5. Inter Class Competitions were conducted on Plant Identification, Vegetable Carving and Fresh & Dry Flower arrangement on 24.09.2013

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2012 -2013

1. Associating meeting was held on 14.08.2012. The chief Guest was Mr.Amith.C.Vaishnav, Managing director, MegaFoods ltd, Chennai. Elucidate on Life Science Entrepreneur.

2. Organized a State level Seminar on Environmental Impact on Plants : An Overview on13.10.2012. The Keynote address was given by Dr. KhalealChovva,Taliparmba. Kerala, and also gave lecture on the title “Conservation of MangrooveWetlands”.

3. Educational tour was organized for III year Students to Mysore and Ooty from11 .09.12 to 16.09.12 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.

4. Field visit was organized for II year Students to Shiva parvathi pushpa horticultural garden on 22.01.13.

5. Placards affixed for the campus plants with Botanical name, vernacular name and Family for about 50 plants.

6. Placards done for 50 Medicinal Plants for the Herbal garden with the Botanical Name, Vernacular name and Medicinal uses.

7. Herbal Club along with Enviroclub published a Booklet entitled “ Trees in J.B.A.S College – A Photo Identification Guide” on 13.02.13.The Booklet was released by Mr. Moosa Raza , Chairman, S.I.E.Trust and the Key note address delivered by Mr.Subramaniam, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Chennai circle. Felicitation done by Mr. Narashiman, Associate Professor, Madras Christian College.

8. Tree census Programme done for Teynampet Area in collaboration with Indian Forest Department for creating Data Base of Chennai Trees.


ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2011 -2012

1. Associating meeting was held on 21.07.11. The chief Guest was Dr. G. Sivaraman, Managing director, Arogya Health Centre, Kilpauk,  - 10. Eludidate on Scope of Plant Pharmaceutics, in the coming years.
2. Tree Censing Programme  was done in collaboration with Indian Forest Department on 15.08.2011.Venue – JBAS College forWomen.
3. Organzised InterDepartmental Competitions – Botanica - 2011
4. Practical Demonstration on Vegetable Carving was done by S.Vinoth Kumar,Principal of Sai carving Institute Chennai on 3.12.2011 for III yr B.Sc students.
5. Organised a seminar on Nature and Forest Conservation on 09.12.2011. The Speakers are Dr.Annamalai, IFS, Additional principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Pangal Maligai, Saidapet,Chennai – 15 and Dr.Murugeswaran , Assisant Director, Botany, Regional Research Institute for Unani Medicine, Royapuram, Chennai -13 and Inter – collegiate competitions are also conducted.
6. Practical Demonstration on permanent Slide Preparation - Microtechnique was done by Dr.S.Amer Jothi Retd, HOD of Botany,Presidency college,Chennai on 27.01.2012 for III yr B.Sc students.
7. Educational Tour was Organized for III year Students to Mysore and Ooty from 13.09.11 – 18.09.11 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.


ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2010 -2011

1. Association meeting was held on 23.7.10. The chief Guest was Mrs.T.V.Poonguzhali, Associate professor in Botany, Queen Marys college , Ch – 4. Elucidate on Bioremediation of Algae in metal effluents.   
2.Organised a seminar on Biodeversity on 11.1.2011. The Speakers are Dr.Narasimhan, Associate Professor, Madras Christian College and P.Sudhakar, Join Director, C. P. R Environment Education Centre and Inter – collegiate competitions are also conducted.
3.Herbal Club was inaugurated on  15.12.2010 as a part of Enviroclub.
4. Educational Tour was Organized for III year Students to Ooty and Conoor from 28.07.10 – 01.08.10 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2009 -2010

1. Association meeting was held on 31.07.2009 .The chief Guest was Dr. Ravindhran, Senior Lecturer ,Loyola college.Elucidated on the Topic, Plant Tissue Culture in Crop Improvement Programme.
2. A seminar Botanica on Biotech Applications was organized on 12.01.2010. The Resource person Dr.S.Periyar selvam, Asst.Prof. Dept of Biotechnology, Vel’s College of Arts and Science spoke on the topic Applications of Biotechnology and an eminent speaker Dr.N.K.Udayaprakash Assistant Professor of Biotechnology, Veltech Hitech Engineering College Focused on the topic Aerobiology . Inter- Collegiate and Inter- Departmental Competitions were held and Prizes were awarded to the students. Mrs.Bhagyalakshmi Chandrasekhar, Retired Senior Grade Lecturer in Botany, was the Judge for the paper presentation session which focused on “Insitu Conservation of Endangered Medicinal Plants and Bio – luminescent Plants”. Mrs.Zeenathunnisa,Reader and HOD of Biochemistry  was the judge for the street play on Global Environmental Problems.
3. Educational Tour was Organized for III year Students to Ooty from 4.08.09 – 08.08.09  to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium.         

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2008 -2009

1. Association meeting was held on 10.10.2008 .The chief Guest was Dr.Mathuram, Research Officer, Captain Srinivasa Moorthy Drug Research Institute for Ayurveda Elucidated on the Topic, Isolation of Active Principles from Plants and Drug Standardization.
2. A Seminar ‘Botanica’ was organized on 12.1.2009. The Resource person Prof.P.T.Kalaiselvan , Ph.D,C.A.S in Botany , University of Madras, Spoke on the topic’ Nanotechnology and a eminent speaker Dr.Wilson, M.V.Sc.Ph.D., Associate Professor ,TANUVAS, Focused on the Topic Bioinformatics Intercollegiate and Inter- Departmental Competitions were held and prizes were awarded to the students. The Judges for the competitions were Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi Chandrasekaran, Retired SGL in Botany for the event, Paper Presentation. Mrs. Faridha, HOD Chemistry, JBAS College for Women for the event, Biolyrics and Dr.Sanjida Haris, Prinicipal and HOD of the Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, JBAS College for Women for the event, Rangoli with plant parts.
3. Educational Tour was Organized for III year Students to Wayanad, Kerala from 17.12.08 – 21.12.08.To study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium   

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :2007 -2008

1. Association meeting was held on 12.12.07 .The chief Guest was Dr. T. Thirunarayanan, Siddha physician, Centre for traditional Medicine and Research .Elucidated on the Topic Medicinal plants – Food, Cosmetics and Drugs.
2. A Seminar ‘Botanica’ was organized on 07.02.2008. The Resource person Dr.Gabriel Abraham Immanual Ebenezer S.S.Lecturer Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, Madras, Chirstian College on the topic “ Role of tissue culture in Biotechnology” and a eminent speaker Dr.S.Somasundaram, Asst.Professor in Botany, National Institute of Siddha Focused on the Topic “Botanical Sources of Drugs”. Intercollegiate and Inter- Departmental Competitions were held and prizes were awarded to the students. The Judges for the competitions were Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi Chandrasekaran, Retired SGL in Botany for the event Biolyrics,Mrs.Iqbalunnisa Irfanullah Retired S.G.Lecturer for the Vegetable Carving and Dr.Sanjida Haris, Prinicipal and HOD of the Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, JBAS College for Women for the event, Jewellery Designing.
3.Educational Tour was Organized for III year Students to Ooty, Conoor and Valparai from 20.08.07 – 25.08.07 to study the flora in their natural habitat and to collect the Specimens for Herbarium .

 

OUT REACH  PROGRAMME    

The students of the Dept of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology will be sent to any one of the following Institutions along with one of the staff members to do the social activities like :

1. Coaching classes for Primary and Middle school children
2. Creating  awareness  on dowry system
3. Inculcating  Sanitary practices
4. Need to preserve the Environment
5. Women’s role in the development of Modern India
