 Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College is the first Women’s College under the aegis of the University of Madras to offer Political science at the under graduate level. The department of political science was started as an independent department in 1973 and has an impressive and enviable academic legacy. Ever since its inception, the department has been obtaining the university first ranks continuously, due to its distinguished faculty, who were able to motivate and instill interest in students. Percentage of the students employed and the distinguished positions they occupy is in itself an indication of the quality of teachers of the department.

The grant of autonomy in 2005 and adoption of C.B.C.S in 2008 enabled the department to innovate and experiment with new papers in order to remain at the cutting edge of knowledge. The department endeavours to maintain a curriculum that will develop women of great integrity and make enlightened choices and exercise intelligent judgment in the society. The department has firmly dedicated itself to enhancing academic excellence and facilities required to implement the academic performance. It endeavours to impart the students to hold high standards of performance, values, discipline and development of personalities. The students are trained and equipped to become good citizens. The curriculum below is expected to provide the above features mentioned.

FUTURE PLANS :

  • The department intends to introduce M.A Political science in near future.
  • To make students employable after their graduation, the department intends to start a coaching programme for various competitive examinations to enable the students excel in various fields.
  • The Department also intends to coach the students aspiring to become civil servants.

Student Achievements

The final year students are taken for one-day training programme on ‘Human Rights’ at Presidency College every year since 2009. This programme is organized in collaboration with National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi. It was an activity based training programme. Eminent scholars in the field of Human Rights enlighten our students on various aspects of Human Rights and Participation Certificates are given. They also attend a National Seminar organized by Presidency College on 10th December every year to celebrate International Human Rights Day.

In order to impart Environmental Awareness and educate them on Enviromental Rights, the second and the final year students are taken to field trips to various places like Pulicat Lake, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Vandaloor Zoo, Mahabalipuram.

The students also participate in a Two Day National Seminar organized by Indian Institute of Public Enterprises every year in the month of August since 2010. Seminar kits and participation certificate are issued to the students by the Institute of Public Enterprises. Our students actively participates in such seminars.
 
Twenty final year students were “Special Invitee” to attend a Lecture on “A Vision for the 21st Century” delivered by the Secretary of State Mrs. Hillary Clinton, USA at Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram, Chennai on 20.7.2011.

Tanvir Zehra, III B.A. Political Science participated in National Level Seminar organized jointly by Anna Adarsh College for Women and Indian Institute of Public Administration and won 1st prize of Rs.1000 in Oratorical competition consecutively for 2 years – 2010-11 and 2011-2012.

The students are continuously assessed and motivated on the basis of their performance in the class tests, assignments, class seminars and attendance. The faculty imparts best practices to the students by counselling them on cleanliness, personal hygiene, civic manners, moral and ethical values.


Sports

Our students have excelled in sports and various other extra-curricular activities. They have represented the college in various State and Regional level tournaments and brought laurels to the department. To mention a few.

Ms. Vimala was a “Sports Star” in athletics at State level (2010-11).

Ms. Anjammal was the Best out-going “Sports Star” of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College  (2011-12).  She has also been selected to represent our college at State level in athletic.

Ms. Abinaya is the “Rising Sports Star”.  She is selected to represent our college at National level.

Activities

 

The department conducts on a regular basis workshops, seminars, curricular and co-curricular activities for the benefit of students and staff. To name a few, a workshop on “India’s Foreign Policy – with reference to Indo-US and Sino-Indian relations” was held in 2007-08, a seminar on “Communication Skills and Personality Development”, 2008-09, a talk on “Secularism in India”, 2009-10, a lecture on “Sri Lankan Crisis”, 2010-2011. His Excellency Mr. Vadivel Krishnamoorthy, Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Southern India inaugurated the Political Science Association Activities for the academic year 2011-12.  The Deputy High Commissioner delivered a speech on the “Indo Sri Lankan relations with reference to current issues”.

From 2009 onwards a Workshop on “The Working of the Indian Constitution” is conducted annually. Under the banner “Politicus”, Inter-departmental and inter-collegiate competitions like Collage, Quiz, Debate, Poster and Oratorical competition are conducted by the department.

The Department organizes regularly inter-departmental and intra-departmental competitions under the banner, “Republic Day & Constitution Awareness Programme” every year.

Staff Activities

Staff members regularly attend, publish and present papers in National and International Seminars, Workshops and Conferences.

Dr. (Mrs.) A. S. Mallika, HOD has presented 2 papers in National Seminar and 1 paper in International Seminar and have published 2 papers.

Mrs. S. Jameela has presented 9 papers in National Seminars and 2 papers in International Seminars.  She has also attended a refresher course in Human Rights at ASC, University of Madras 2009. Mrs. S. Jameela was a question paper setter and key setter for the recently held Group I examination (August 2012).

Dr. (Mrs.) A. S. Mallika and S. Jameela are examiners for various city colleges and have chaired the Technical Sessions at National Seminars.

Mrs. M. Rafima has presented 2 papers in National Seminars and 1 paper in International Seminar. 

Mrs. Nilofer Nisha has presented 5 papers in National Seminars and 2 papers in International Seminars. She has qualified the State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lectureship, 2012.

On the Republic Day a presentation is made by the Head of the Department on “Muslims contribution in the drafting of the Indian Constitution” every year.





Result analysis

We have UG I, II  and III year classes. We admit students from socially and economically backward section comprising average and below average. Inspite of this, we have been producing good results throughout. The following is our pass % .
