Department of English

History

Two score and seventeen years ago, at the inception of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women, then formerly known as S.I.E.T. College, the Department of English was established. The undergraduate course in English Literature was introduced in 1969; and in 1976, the department was upgraded to a post-graduate department with the introduction of the M.A. degree course. In these fifty seven eventful years, the department  has achieved several laurels. From its illustrious faculty to its well-placed alumni, and its present crop of enterprising students and committed staff members, the department has acquired a unique status in the college.

Like the central nervous system of the human body, the English Department reaches out to every other department in the college, awakening students to the beauty of the English language and honing their creative and communicative skills, in order that these students may, in turn, take their places in society and contribute to the betterment of the country.

The English Department has always nourished and cultivated the all-round development of the students’ personality through various co-curricular and extra –curricular activities like debate, elocution, poetry recitation, quiz, crossword-solving and dramatic competitions. The English department is also the moving spirit behind ‘J Theatre’ – The JBAS College theatre group. J Theatre is made up of a bunch of highly enthusiastic and devoted young students from JBAS College. Recognising  the transforming power of theatre, the English Department hones the talents of budding actors. J Theatre’s first official play was ‘On Account of Being A Woman’ which was performed at the Rani Seethai Hall on 23rd and 24th February 2006.

As part of the association activities, the Department conducts the Inter Collegiate Kennedy Memorial Debate Competition and the Inter Collegiate Gandhi Memorial Quiz Competition. The Department also conducts the Major

M.A. Munthakhim Essay writing competition which focuses on National Integration. The English Department organizes workshops every year to upgrade the skills of the outgoing students.

The Department has organized State level, National level and International level Seminars and Conferences. Eminent Academicians and Scholars are invited as resource persons, moderators and panelists. A two day State Level Seminar was organized on ‘Translation Studies’ in February 2005. In connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, a two day National level Conference on ‘Women Writers of the Sub-Continent’ was organized in September 2006.  The Department of English in collaboration with ELTAI conducted the 4th International and 40th Annual Conference on ‘Managing Mixed Ability Classes’ from 7th to 9th August 2009.

The English Department offers a foundation course in English to all the UG classes in addition to B.A. and M.A. in English Literature. The Department also offers Soft Skills to all the  UG classes. At the PG level, Soft skills is offered as an interdisciplinary subject. The Undergraduate Course in Literature offers an insight into the various genres of literature and the syllabi covers the various periods of literature from the Elizabethan Age till the Contemporary Period. The B.A. course also offers Career Oriented papers like ‘Business English,’ ‘Communication for Career Advancement’ and ‘Journalism’ to equip the learners to get into professions like journalism, freelancing, etc. The M.A. course also covers the various periods of literature at an advanced level. The M.A. course offers optional papers in ‘Writings by and on Women’ / ‘Copy Editing’ and  ‘English for Careers’ / ‘Business Communication.’ The paper on ‘Creative Writing’ helps the students to showcase their creative writing skills in genres such as poetry, short story etc.The course also offers a project paper which trains the students to do research and present their findings. The Department of English has compiled and published textbooks for the Foundation Course in English  – Reflections in 2007, Radiance Volume I in 2011 and Radiance Volume II in 2012.
