Department of English


History

The English Department reaches out to every other department in the college, guiding students to the beauty of the English language and improving their creative and communicative skills so that they attain a respectable position in the society.


The English Department has harvested the development of the students personality through various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities like debate, elocution, poetry recitation, quiz, crossword-solving etc., puzzle dumb charred painting, collage, puzzle etc., The Department organizes workshops every year to upgrade the skills of the student community.


Our Department along with the parent department conducted ELTLI the 4th International and 40th Annual Conference on ‘Managing Mixed Ability Classes’ from 7th to 9th August 2009.


The English Department offers a foundation course in English to all the UG classes. The Department also offers Soft Skills to all the UG classes. The B.A. course also offers career oriented papers like ‘Business English, ‘Communication for Career Advancement’ and ‘Journalism’ to equip the learners’ to get into professions like journalism, freelancing, etc. 


The Department of English has compiled and published textbooks along with the parent department for the foundation course in English Radiance Volume 1 in 2011 and Radiance Volume II in 2012.

LIVE WIRE- Campus NEWSLETTER

 Live Wire” had its first publication on 29th july, 2009.

  • It is published online by papyrus club, a venture of the Deccan Chronicle Group every fortnight.
  • It keeps the students and teachers updated on all the campus news, competitions, achievers, seminars and events.
  • Student editors manage the newsletter under the guidance of the teacher co-coordinator.

HONOUR’S CLUB

“Reading makes a complete man”.

Book Review Competition was initiated by our reverend Chairman Padma Bhusan Moosa Raza Sahib, who sanctioned Rs. 1 Lakh for the Honour’s Club  Book Review Competition, to inculcate the habit of reading books.I,II and III prizes of Rs 1000, Rs. 750, Rs. 500 are awarded to both staff and students.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME 2012-13

  • On the 14th and 21st of October 2012, two consecutive Sundays the II year students of B.A. ENGLISH LITERATURE visited the poor boys home Madrasa-e-Azam situated on the Anna Salai.
  • The girls spent the days from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and completed 15 hours of the “Outreach programme”. They taught the children subjects that they needed help with, like Mathematics, Economics and Accounts. The girls talked to the children, played games with them, encouraged them to sing songs and speak in public.
  • Our college girls had brought pens, pencils, sharpeners, rubbers, rulers, notebooks, toffees, chips and biscuits which they distributed to the children before winding up the visit.
  • As the college girls took leave of the children, they children expressed a wish to be visited once again and the girls also look forward to visiting the institution again if given a chance.

Workshops and Competitions

  • Two workshops were conducted on 18.09.2014 and 10.10.2014. The Resource Person for the first workshop was Abul Faiz, Founder & Director, A. F. School of News Reading. The topic was ‘Your Success through Communication’.
  • The second workshop was on ‘Linguistics’ and the Resource Person was Dr. Sathikul Ameen, Assistant Professor, Department of English, The New College.
  • The Literary Fiesta was inaugurated on 06.02.2015. The Chief Guest was Ms. Subhashree Desikan, Editor, The Hindu. O the same day the inter-departmental events were also conducted. Students from various disciplines enthusiastically participated in all the events.
  • Inter-collegiate competitions were held on 24.02.2015. Students from various city colleges took part in the events conducted by the department. Dr. Watson Solomon, Freelance Writer, poet and author, was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory.
