History

Republic Day Parade attended by Ms. Menaka, Final year, Corporate Economics at New Delhi.
 The Department organized International Symposium on 27.11.2010.  Topic : The key role of financial institutions for the sustainable development of India.
Over all best department for the past 3 years – Rolling shield.

The Department of Economics is one of the biggest departments of the college with  450 students. This is one of the parent department of this institution since its inception in 1955. Till today 49 batches of B.A. Economics and 9 batches of B.A. Corporate Economics students have passed out of the department. Sudha Srinivasan M.A., was the founder Head of the Department. She was one of the founder teachers of this college. Mrs. Parveen Fathima, M.A., M.Phil., is the present Head of the Department.

Our Department is offering B.A. Corporate Economics from 2003 to keep tune with the changing trends in education. The department is proud of its illustrious alumnae, who occupy many important prestigious posts, among them being Mrs.Badar Sayeed, M.L.A. Tamil Nadu, Dr. Gowhar Jahn, Reader & Association Professor and Dean, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai.


Highlights

The results of the department at the university examinations have been 91 - 99% for the past 5 years. Our students have been securing university ranks not only in Economics but also in other subjects like Urdu, Arabic, French, Hindi, Sanskrit and Tamil. Our students participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities both at Collegiate, inter-Collegiate, state level and national level. In NCC, NSS and sports they have won many laurels to the department and college as well. The department association meeting is conducted every year under the banner "ECOSTRIDE" in which eminent speakers from various fields address the students.

Department Resources

The Department has its own library with nearly 1,500 books and journals which are related to the syllabus and various competitive exams. Library is open to all the students and staff whenever they are free and after the college hours for the issue of books. The library books are updated yearly depending on the requirements.

 

FUTURE PLANS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • Planning to get P.G. Course in Business Economics
  • Making three (3) sections due to more demand for the course
  • Planning to have "Students Club" to help weak students
  • To introduce computer related subjects to update students

2007-2008

1. Menaka                             Received Rajpath Award from the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on 26.01.2007 at New Delhi. She was P.C. Commander at Republic Day Parade representing TamilNadu.
2. Farida Banu S               Participated in the National level P.Inter collegiate volley ball tournament held between 9th and 11th 2007  conducted at M.O.P Vaishnava College for women, won III place.
3. Gaikhuamliu Rikhi           Awarded Certificate of Merit in the Inter – Zonal Basket Ball Tournament A – Zone held at University of Madras.

2008-2009

1. S. Nazia Fathima won First University Rank in Urdu
2. Farzana Begum C won Second University Rank in Arabic
3. Mosina Naaz won Proficiency Prize in Arabic
4. Rajashree J took part in Essay Writing Competition conducted by the Ethiraj College for Women and won Third Prize.

Overall Championship was bagged by the Students of the Department.

ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION

2006-2007

For the Academic Year 2006-2007, Economics Association meeting was conducted on 20th September, 2006. Dr. Prof. Uduman Mohideen presided over the function and gave a talk on 'Consumer Behaviour'.

Eco. Asso. was held on 20th March 2007. Dr. Dinakar Lal Thavamani, Department of English, Scot Christian College, Nagercoil presided over the function.

Various activities were conducted under “Eco Stride’ banner on the Topic “Nationalisation of Rivers.

2008-2009

Eco Association Meet was conducted under the banner of Eco. Stride on 20th September 2008, DR. Arunachalam, Prof. Department of Economics gave inaugural speech.

The Department organized a state level workshop on Curriculum Development for CBCS pattern on 2nd March 2009.

Dr. Jothi Murugan, RJD, Chennai Region was the Chief Guest.
Mr. Faizur Rahman Sayeed, Correspondent – Presided over the function.

The Workshop was attended by more than 15 staff of various colleges from all over Tamil Nadu.

2009-2010

1. Economics Association Meeting was inaugurated by Dr. Srinivasan, Professor, Department of Statistics, University of Madras & Sitting Member, Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu.

2010-2011

The Department of Economics organized Economic Association Meeting under the banner “Eco-Stride” on 10.08.2010. The meeting was inaugurated by Mr. G.C. Nagoor, Law Officer, DCE.  He spoke on the topic : “Women & Law”.

A special lecture for III B.A. Corporate Ecoinomics was organized on 31.08.2010.  Dr. Rameza A Rasheed, Retired Staff of Economics Department on “Women Entrepreneurship”

Valedictory Function

On 7.2.11 under the banner Ecostride 2011 Projects and Models display, Quiz Competition and Debates were conducted,. Prizes and Certificates were distributed by the Principal, JBAS College and Dr. Jannath Musthafa, HoD, Department of Economics delivered the vote of thanks.

Result analysis

The Department of Economics has got the strength of more than 432 students. We have U.G. two batches in I, II and III year classes.

We introduced Corporate Economics in the academic year 2003-2004, to keep in tune with the changing trends, in education and job market. First set of the students passed out successfully with 99% as pass percentage in ApriI' 2006.

We admit students from socially and economically backward sections comprising average and below average. Inspite of the quality of students input we have been producing remarkably good results throughout. The following is our pass percentage.
