History

Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed college for Women, formerly SIET women college, a pioneer educational institution in Chennai was established in the year 1955 by Late Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed and his wife, Mrs. FathimaAkthar for the upliftment of women’s education. This college is affiliated to The University of Madras . The institution has been accredited as a 5 star institution by none other than the National Assessment and AccredidationCouncil , New Delhi. The college offers 25 UG courses and research programs leading to MPhil and Phd in 6 Departmnets with the student strength of more than 5000 in both day and evening college.

Right from the inception of the college in 1955. Psychology was offered as one of the subjects for the pre university course. In 1965 Psychology was introduced at the Undergraduate level at the initiative of Dr.(Mrs.) Savithri Krishnan former Head of the Department of Psychology. The immense popularity and demand for the Psychology course led automatically to the post Graduate course in Applied Psychology for which affiliation was secured in 1976 from the University of Madras.

The interest and enthusiasm of the staff and students of the 1988 batch led to the setting up of a center for mentally challenged children. This also serves as a workshop of for the students for practical training under the Guidance of the faculty members of the Psychology Department. This center was realized due to the encouragement and support given by the former chairman and correspondent Late Mr. Rasheed Ahmed Sayeed Sahib and the Principal Mrs. Shanaz Farhath with the active guidance of Dr.(Mrs.)Savithri Krishnan.

After the retirement of Dr.Savithri Krishnan during the year 1990, Mrs Salma Salahuddin took over the charge of Head of The Department. The department was granted recognition for parttimePh D Programme in 1991. Mrs. MaliniKasthuriRangan retired in the year 1993.

Another landmark in the growth and expansion of the department has been the establishment of a Counselling center BLOSSOM in 1995. This center has been established to help the students of the college. Ms.Shantha Mary Joseph, one of our Alumni has been in charge of the center from the year 2000. The center also offers placement services for the students of the college.

It was an occasion of pride and prestige for the Department when the University of Madras granted affiliation for the M Phil Course (Full time and Part time) in Applied Psychology with specialization in student counseling, in the year 1995.

Recognition of the introduction of fulltime Ph.D course in Psychology was granted in 2000. There was a change in the nomenclature from “Department of Psychology “to “Department of Applied Psychology and Behavioral research”

We are proud to place on record that the Department has produced a number of Rank holders and gold medalists continuously. Many students of the Department are well place occupying posts of IAS officers, Bank officials. HR Executives and Trainers and Police officials

Our Alumni also serve as lectures in other city colleges offering Psychology. The Department is proud to place on record on Dr. Mrs. Salma Salahuddin, Head of the Department of Psychology became the principal of the college from 1 June 1998.

The Department is also offering Part-time short term UGC sponsored add on course in skills for personal effectiveness since Oct 2006.The UGC has also sanctioned an advanced PG Diploma in Sports Psychology under its innovative programme in 2007.
